I know we are memeing currently over Virgin Galactic since we anticipate people fat fingers $SPCX on the IPO day, but the company actually has a very unique position in the space sector - it is the only company that offers a ride to space after Blue Origin left that market to focus on moon stuff and their satellite constellation.
The technology that Virgin Galactic uses was pioneered in the early 00s. The SpaceShipOne upon which the Virgin galactic space plane is based won the XPRIZE for human space flight in 2004. The space plane is first ferried to an altitude of about 50 000 feet by a larger carrier plane where it is released and conducts it's suborbital space flight.
The company conducted it's first space flight on June 29, 2023, with their first generation space plane the Galactic 01, the plane conducted 7 successful flights with paying costumers and was retired in June 2024. Since then they paused conducting space flight with a 650 passenger long backlog. Their space plane accommodates 4 passenger, so we are talking about a backlog of more than 150 flights.
The reason behind the pause in flights is the migration to their next generation, more efficient, Delta-class space plane. They expect return to flight in Q4 2026.
My thesis is simple - Space is hot now and they are the only company offering a seat which will get you to space even if it is like for a few minutes.
